Portrait Photographer | Lighting Guru
Austin photographer Nate Hall fell in love with photography during college. After taking a film photography class as an elective at Texas State University, he switched his major to, you guessed it, photography, and spent the next couple of years taking as many fine art photography classes as he could, studying both film and digital. He was initially drawn to product photos, enjoying the challenge of coming up with a concept and then focusing on every detail to execute it perfectly. When he and wife Becky decided to launch Beck and Hall Photography, Nate signed up for a Photoshop class at Austin Community College (ACC) to refresh his digital editing skills. He found the class incredibly enriching and decided to see what else he might learn from the professional photography program at ACC. He not only gained a great deal more experience with studio lighting and portraiture techniques, he also realized how much he enjoys photographing people. Nate has a knack for reading light and working with shadows to create drama in an image. He was immediately drawn to low-key portraits and has developed a signature style that is edgy, dramatic and evocative. During portrait sessions, he likes to have a conversation with subjects, capturing genuine laughs, natural poses and raw emotions. When he’s not working in the studio or on a location shoot, Nate enjoys hiking, video games and playing guitar. As a musician himself, he especially enjoys working with bands and singer-songwriters.
Retoucher | All Things Non-Photography
Becky started out handling the non-photography side of the business (booking, billing, blogging, website maintenance, etc.) and assisting Nate on photo shoots. Wanting to be the best assistant she could be, she signed up for a digital photography class at ACC, which rekindled the love of photography she had in her early 20s. Back then, she used to shoot film on an old Canon AE-1, spending hours wandering around San Antonio and Austin photographing people and street scenes. She also enjoyed a brief stint at a San Antonio portrait studio photographing kids and families before moving to Austin in 2002 to study writing at St. Edward’s University. Taking digital photography classes at ACC reminded Becky how much she enjoyed photography and introduced her to digital photo editing. She discovered that as much as she enjoys taking photos, she often prefers the editing process and can spend hours sitting at the computer focusing on the fine details of images. Becky has a sharp eye and has honed her retouching skills to make people look their best, naturally. She knows how to take an already great photo to the next level and handles the bulk of the post-processing and retouching at Beck and Hall Photography. Becky still loves to write, too, and works as grant writer for Austin Pets Alive!, an amazing animal welfare nonprofit. She also enjoys hiking, cuddling with her two dogs and two cats, and yoga.
